Si Wu Wan
Si Wu Tang is the TCM primary formula for tonifying the blood. The original formula of Si Wu Tang is composed of the following individual herbs Shu Di Huang - Rehmannia, Dang Gui -Angelica, Bai Shao - Paeonia and Chuan Xiong - Ligusticum.
The Chinese therapeutic actions of Si Wu Wan are said to nourish/tonify the blood whilst simultaneously regulating blood circulation. All of the herbs in this formula enter the blood level, especially Rehmannia which is also used in deficiency heat patterns such as night sweats. In TCM, blood deficiency usually manifests with pale, cold skin and a pale, dry tongue with white coating, the pulse is deficient and thin in all positions and often moves superficially towards the skin.
Other common clinical signs include pruritis, dryness, dandruff, a thin, brittle hair coat, cracked hooves and paw pads; these signs are the result of the inability of the blood to nourish the skin and hair coat.
Clinically, Si Wu Tang has been used to treat anemia, postpartum anemia, threatened abortion, infertility, insomnia, chronic nephritis, chronic itching and dermatitis, atopic dermatitis and urticaria.
The pharmacological effects of Si Wu Tang include hematopoietic, radio protective, anti-pruritic, anti-inflammatory and anti-neoplastic.
